Universal Pre-K: 'This Whole Thing Is a Scam'
SDFPC opposes state or federal government funded Preschool...Here's why:
1. Reduces options for families: When government funds school for three and four year olds, it takes from private daycare/preschols the age groups most profitable to running the daycare business. The bottom line, private day-cares close their doors becasue simply caring for infant - 2 year olds is not economically feasible to maintain the business. Is government interested in getting into infant/toddler care?
2. Legislation like 2009, SB 191 Opens the door for Statewide Universal Preschool for all 3&4 year olds. All indications are that any bill the legislative body considers can be easily amended to replicate the universal system other states have.
3. Estimated Costs start around $25,000,000. At a time when K-12 is struggling to maintain funding, is this time to expand government education? Funding requests could start in 2009!
4. What's best for children. Documented studies show Moms are the #1 educator for early-childhood.
Govt' funded preschool supports greater involvement of the government in families. Parent/Child relationship is critical in early childhood development. This gives incentive to alternatives to parenting, government funded school for 3&4 year olds.
- Children do best in a home or home-like environment.
- Institutional edcuation settings have been shown to be ineffective and in some cases harmful to children.
- Research doesn't support long-term benefits of preschool for children.
5. Marginalizes Family.
