SDFPC opposes SB191 because SB191...(Talking Points)

1. Opens the Door for Statewide Universal Preschool for all 3&4 year olds. All indications are that once the bill passes, the law can be easily amended to replicate the system other states have.  Law could be changed by 2010

2.  Marginalizes Family.

SB191 supports greater involvement of the government in families.  Parent/Child relationship is critical in early childhood development.  This gives incentive to alternatives to parenting, government funded school for 3&4 year olds.

3.  Estimated Costs start around $25,000,000.  At a time when K-12 is struggling to maintain funding, is this time to expand government education?  Funding requests could start in 2009!

4.  What's best for children.  Documented studies show Moms are the #1 educator for early-childhood.

  • Children do best in a home or home-like environment.
  • Institutional edcuation settings have been shown to be ineffective and in some cases harmful to children.
  • Research doesn't support long-term benefits of preschool for children.

So...stand with us as we Stand for Families.

No message is as powerful as a Visual Message.  Show legislaotrs we are opposed to legislation that marginalizes family and parents like SB191 does.
